This cannon measures 17 5/8" in length with approx. a 3/4" bore. These cannons are commonly known as lantaka but are also referred to as rentaka or kanyon. They were extensively used by merchant vessels traveling the waters surrounding the Malay Archipelago. They can be found throughout the Southeast Asia area and were popular in pre-colonial times. Lantaka were primarily used to defend against pirates inhabiting the area. Most of the cannon were made at foundries in Pahang and Malacca. The cannon is mounted for display on a driftwood stand. CONDITION: cannon has a dark, old, crusty patina, but still functions & swivels well. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (02-19913/BF). $400-600.
