1. Large 2-tier military-style surgical amputation kit by HG Kern, Philadelphia with Civil War address 25th N. 6th Street & Market. Kern contracted with US Army Medical Department to make kits for field use. Tools for amputation include 3 large scalpels, 2 bone saws and bone snipping rongeurs. Also in kit are trephines & Hey’s saw which are tools for cutting skull for relieving pressure on brain. Bullet forceps & bullet probe are also in kit but not fitted. Very good overall, most tools marked "HG Hern".
2. Jappaned quinine tin with US Medical Depot label, scarce in very good condition with label and original stopper cork.
3. Cased scale, good overall and complete.
4. Rare regulation military surgeon’s green silk sash, fair to good overall, complete, good knots, several stains and scattered small holes.
5. Regulation worsted green medical Hardee hat cord, very good.
6. Fine pair of Medical Staff epaulets, "MS" insignia embroidered with bullion wreaths, Horstmann Bros. & Allien makers label. Fine overall, rank insignia removed.
7. Fine pair of Medical staff shoulder straps, embroidered bullion "MS" and major’s insignia on black velvet as was regulation. Good to very good overall, backings gone and some bullion strands loose. (02-24315/JS). NON-GUN. $4,000-6,000.
