WOOD SHEATH. This lg. Confederate knife like so many others, had one purpose “to kill Yankees”. Measures 18” overall w/ 13 1/4” dbl. edged blade measuring 1 3/4” wide & 1/4” thick w/ central spine. Blade is nicely filed to very sharp edges. Guard is simple & practical, being made from a single piece of tapered wood w/ 2 lg. iron ferrules & 3” oval iron cross guard. Sheath is classic Confederate design being made w/ 2 pieces of fitted wood nailed along edges plus a leather cover w/ integral cut belt loop which is still intact. There are 3 lg. script initials scratched into leather cover “R S W”, below initials there is indiscernible script. CONDITION: very good overall, blade is overall dark gray still showing tool marks & retains fairly sharp edges. Ferrules & cross guard have matching iron patinas, wood sheath is chipped w/ several reductions at top & missing throat, surface of leather sheath cover is much better than normally found. PROVENANCE: ex-Collection of Wayne McNeese. (02-13588/JS). $2,000-3,000.
