RHINOCEROS. This spectacular, monumental carving of a rhinoceros appears to be executed in ironwood and was likely carved in Africa by an indigenous sculptor. It measures approx. 35" x 18 1/2" at the shoulder. The horn rises 6 1/2" from the animal's snout. The rhino's toenails are highlighted in white, and the eyes appear to be carved bone. The rhino is true to form but quite folky in appearance. The exceptional weight of this sculpture leads us to believe the media is ironwood. The animal's skin texture, ears, horn, and obvious maleness are well executed and readily apparent. CONDITION: the sculpture is solid, although there is a notable drying crack on the left side of the animal's head and under its chin. There is another crack on the right side about at the haunches. There are also two short drying cracks on the left midsection of the beast. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (02-23549/BF). $1,000-2,000.
