LAST FIGHT". This popular framed print has a sight size of 41 1/2" x 29 1/2". The gold leaf frame measures approx. 48" x 36". The image is that of General Custer's last stand with the 7th Cavalry against the Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes at the Little Bighorn in Montana. This battle was part of the Great Sioux War of 1876 and was possibly the most significant engagement. In this battle, five of the 7th Cavalry's 12 companies were completely annihilated, and General Custer, along with two of his brothers, a nephew, and his brother-in-law, were killed. This print is from an original painting that was presented to the 7th Regiment of the US Cavalry. It depicts a pitched battle between Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry at the Little Bighorn. The print is boldly titled "CUSTER'S LAST STAND" along with the words "The original painting has been presented to The Seventh Regiment U.S. Cavalry." Several of the principal participants are named in blue print just under the image. CONDITION: the print does show darkening and some water damage. There are three vertical dark lines, possibly from folding many years ago. There are minor losses at the border, not affecting the image proper. There appears to be some very minor, though visible, insect damage to the image itself. The frame is solid but shows wear and some losses to the plaster scroll detail. The glass has two cracks in the upper right-hand corner. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (02-23539/BF). $300-600.
