1st SERGEANT WILLIE ANDERSON BINKLEY USMC. This extensive group consists of many items belonging to 1st Sergeant Binkley of the United States Marine Corps. 1) One of the most interesting items in the group is the G-1 type flight jacket belonging to Sergeant Binkley featuring a gold & silver bullion USMC “MED CRUISE” patch dating to 1957 from the USS Lake Champlain. The patch is sewn to the front right of the coat above the pocket. The right sleeve has an American flag at the top. The left sleeve has a USS Lake Champlain patch with an eagle and the word “EXCELSIOR” above. The back of the jacket has a large rectangular red patch featuring a caricature of a marine charging down the deck of a carrier with bayonet fixed. The patch reads “MARINE DETACHMENT USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63) 1972 WESTPAC”. The jacket is missing its leather name patch in the front, and the official label is in the back of the collar, but it is worn & illegible. CONDITION: jacket is solid with good seams. The zipper works well. The elastic waist & cuffs are quite worn. 2) The dress blue uniform with pants of Sergeant Binkley with all appropriate buttons & insignia, including red & yellow 1st Sergeant stripes on each arm. Below the stripes are 3 service hashmarks. Pants are included with this uniform. CONDITION: uniform shows light overall wear. 3) A Marine Corps OD fatigue shirt with “USMC” stenciled on the front, along with an EGA with ribbon. CONDITION: uniform shows light overall wear. 4) A pair of OD fatigue pants with a few holes and heavily stained with blood, likely from when Sergeant Binkley was shot in the hand while on patrol in Vietnam. CONDITION: pants are well used with stains & a few holes. 5) A green Marine Corps service dress uniform from WWII with Gunnery Sergeant stripes on the sleeves along with 5 service hashmarks near each cuff. The uniform has a Marine Corps Good Conduct Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, American Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, National Defense Ribbon, and WWII Victory Medal Ribbon. This uniform comes complete with pants, shirt, and tie. This uniform did not belong to Sergeant Binkley, but came from the same family and may have belonged to his father or an older brother.
