GUN. Cal. 40-44. NSN. Bbl. 37” octagon, one 40 cal. rifled, the other 44 cal. smoothbore. Top flat of the rifled bbl. is script marked “LK”. Both bbls. have blade front sights w/ fixed V notch rear sights. Rifle bbl. has a filled original dovetail w/ sight moved 9 1/2” forward of breech. Iron lock has wheat stalk engraving. Brass side plate is engraved “L. Kaup 1855”. Swivel release is located at front of trigger guard. Swivel section components & top tang are iron. Roman nose stock of curly maple w/ cheek piece. Rectangular lid pierced segmented patchbox. Brass crescent buttplate, finger curl trigger guard & side plate. Bbl. section has full length pin fastened forearm sections. Right side has brass thimble & 2 pipes for hardwood ramrod. Left side has 3 German silver eight point star escutcheons. WEIGHT: 11 lbs, 4 ozs. American Gunsmiths by Frank Sellers lists the following: “KAUP, LEROY, Union Co., Pennsylvania, 1850c. Flintlock Kentucky rifle. (Kauffman)”. CONDITION: bbls. & iron portions have heavy brown patina showing small dents & marks w/ pitting in breech area. Brass has acquired a mottled patina. Stock has worn finish w/ dents having cracks at toe. Both forearm sections have 3” added wood repairs forward of the breech. Lock will not hold in cock position unless trigger is set. Swivel breech is not releasing & swiveling properly. Dark pitted bores. PROVENANCE: from the collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-22306/DS). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
