This very interesting flag is printed on white cotton and measures approx. 35" x 23 1/2". It appears to date to the late 19th to the early 20th century. It is a style of flag known to have been used at the Battle of White Plains, NY, and was captured from a New York militia unit by Hessians on 28 October 1776. The top of the flag has black 4 3/4" letters that read "LIBERTY OR DEATH". The lower left quadrant of the flag has a yellow-colored sword crossed with a broken pike having a red liberty cap perched upon it. A very interesting piece worthy of further research. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: an envelope that the flag was stored in for many years. CONDITION: Cotton is a bit discolored and shows some very minor water damage. The hoist end has a few tears and tiny losses at the corners. (02-23640/BF). $500-1,500.
