HUGHES & SONS. Cal. 28 Ga. NSN. The 35 1/2" twist bbls. are engraved "Robert Hughes & Sons Makers Birmingham" on slightly raised game rib. Patent breeches do not have blowouts. Bottoms of bbls. are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs for 28 ga. Breech iron is scroll engraved. Front spring percussion locks w/ tall flat faced serpentine hammers are engraved w/ near 80% coverage scroll. "HUGHES" is on each lockplate. Trigger plate has stylized pineapple finial which matches thimble. Scroll engraved trigger guard is unmarked as to number. Lightly fiddle figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 1/4" over steel buttplate w/ short top spur. Point pattern checkering is at grip & forend & a vacant silver shield is on toeline. Stock attaches to bbls. w/ captive sidebolt through shaped steel escutcheons. A rosewood ramrod w/ brass tip & tail mounts through 2 plain pipes. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: R .555", L .556". Restriction: R 0", L 0". Min. Wall Thickness: R .050", L .050". STOCK: DAH: 2 1/4". DAC: 1 1/2". LOP: 14 1/4". CAST: approx. 3/8" on. WEIGHT: 6 lb. 6 oz. CONDITION: good as partially refinished. Bbls. retaining most of their original brown which has considerably darkened. Action & locks w/ considerable cleaning are mostly gray w/ some case hardened color visible where protected. Stock shows old partial refinish on butt portion & some light refinishing around locks & forend. Checkering somewhat worn. Bores are very good w/ very light pitting throughout. Locks are fine. Nipples replaced. Small bore percussion guns are relatively scarce, especially with long bbls. (01-20991/MGM). ANTIQUE. $800-1,500.
