1) Fourth Pattern McKeever cartridge box mfg. by Rock Island Arsenal in 1909. Right side of right inner compartment is marked "ROCK ISLAND/ ARSENAL/ 1909./ TCC". Lid is embossed with "US" within an oval. Brown leather construction with brass fittings. Single brown leather closure strap, with 2 stitched belt loops on rear. Canvas interior features 20 cartridge loops for .30-40 Krag ammunition (10 loops on each side). CONDITION: leather remains malleable, exhibiting scattered superficial marks from handling and storage, with scattered spots/areas of crazing. Closure strap is torn on the right side. Brass fittings have acquired a mellow patina with some spots of verdigris. 2) Apparent Third Pattern McKeever cartridge box mfg. by Rock Island Arsenal. Rear of closure strap is marked with a mostly legible "ROCK ISLAND", with second line of text being illegible. Lid is embossed with "US" within an oval. Black leather construction with brass fittings. Single black leather closure strap with 2 black leather belt loops on rear. Canvas interior of box features 20 cartridge loops for .45-70 Springfield ammunition (10 loops on each side). CONDITION: leather remains malleable, exhibiting varying degrees of age related cracking and crazing overall. Brass fittings have acquired a mellow patina, exhibiting scattered spots of verdigris. 3) Second Pattern McKeever cartridge box mfg. by Rock Island Arsenal. Rear of closure strap is faintly marked with remnants of the RIA "sun rise" stamping. Lid is embossed with "US" within an oval. Interior of lid (leather and canvas belt loops absent) is marked with "D.C.L" and "J.McD" inspector cartouches. Black leather construction with brass fittings, to include the brass reinforcements on corners and brass escutcheon on closure strap. CONDITION: leather remains malleable, exhibiting moderate age related cracking and crazing overall. Brass fittings have acquired a mellow patina. PROVENANCE: Norman Olliff Estate. (02-25690/MLW).
