WILLIAM GASTON (1820-1924); GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS. This lot includes 1) Hardbound book of Gaston and his family's beginning with Judge William Gaston of North Carolina who was born 1778. The book title, "Gaston's" by Edward F. McSweeney, printed privately in 1926. 2) Portions of a scrap album that Gaston had collected which includes numerous items: a) 6 loose political tickets relating to the Democratic Party and elections in the late 1870s and beyond, b) 7 political tickets which are adhered to the scrapbook page, c) a couple of items relating to Jesse Pomeroy; a young man born in 1859, as a youth he killed two other young people and was sentenced to death by hanging which would have made him the first juvenile executed and Gaston felt the sentence was not appropriate and he refused to sign the death warrant. As a result, his life was spared. There are a few letters relating to this that were sent to Gaston. d) Collection of 3 pages of 19th century governmental wax seals including those from the Department of Justice, the Legation of Liberia, State of New Hampshire, and more. e) A group of various celebration menus for political get togethers, f) also serval pages of other documents relating to a special dinner in honor of some Japanese Ambassadors that took place in 1872, just a few years after Japan came out of seclusion.
