Cal. 20 Bore. S# 2612. The 32-1/2" damascus barrel with under rib has octagonal breech section that transitions to 16 sides and then to round through a wedding band. Top flat is engraved "W. Smith Princess Street London". Bottom of barrel is stamped with London black powder proofs and S#. Breech plug is deeply inset on both sides and has four platinum bands over top and platinum lined touch hole. Narrow breech iron is engraved with deeply cut scroll. Lock with flat plate is fitted with W. Smith's distinctive sculptural waterproof vented pan. Roller frizzen (roller on feather spring) is meticulously fitted to pan giving a water tight seal. Flat faced rugged serpentine cock is nicely engraved. Lock plate with feather borders is engraved with coiled sea monsters in front of and behind cock. "William Smith" "Princess Str.t London" is at center of lock and "Patent" "2018" (use number) is behind pan. Trigger plate with deep scroll engraving has stylized pineapple finial. Trigger guard with matching engraving has tigers face on bow. Stock of dense curly maple with spectacular grain measures 13-7/8" over steel buttplate with long top tang. Tang is engraved with deep scroll matching remainder of gun and S#. Stock attaches to barrel with sidebolt through oval silver escutcheons and is checkered at grip. An ebony ramrod with silver tip and brass tail (worm under cap) mounts through two beaded pipes and matching thimble. CONDITION: very good as refinished. Barrel retaining nearly all of a very well done re-brown with fine definition to damascus pattern. Engraving somewhat softened. Lock and most furniture cleaned to silver gray. Stock retains most of an older French polish finish; sharp edges rounded. Shiny bore shows light pitting throughout. Lock is very fine.
