An attractive example of an M1881 w/ lg. flowing red officer’s plume emanating from the heavily gilded plume holder & base. The front eagle has a separately applied crossed cannons insignia w/ central shield bearing a “1” indicating use by the 1st Artillery. Helmet has original gold bullion helmet cords & gilded brass, looped chinstrap running from the top of the helmet to the left side post. Side posts have crossed cannons w/ loop below. Interior is marked, “INSPECTED 1900 N.G.N.Y”. Vent is marked, “RAYMOLD & WHITLOCK”. There is also a “BAKER & MCKENNEY” mark under the vent. CONDITION: helmet body remains solid. Gilding is generally strong. Plume is correct & in solid condition. (02-15747/BF). $500-700.
