"BRIGADE MAJOR" INSCRIBED COLT 1851 NAVY REVOLVERS. Cal. 36. S# 44704/44705. Standard configuration, blued 7.5" octagonal barrels, brass pin front sights, stamped: "-- Address Saml. Colt New-York City –" with long dashes seen on late 3rd models, blued 6-shot cylinders with Texas naval engagement rolled scene. Case-hardened frame, hammer, & loading assembly, blued steel gripstraps, with large triggerguards and short triggers. Left side of each frame stamped "COLTS / PATENT". Grips are high polished varnished walnut. Backstraps inscribed: "BRIGADE MAJOR 2ND BRIGADE" in block letters. Varnished rosewood double case, lined in burgundy velvet. Scalloped brass plaque on lid inscribed: "BRIGADE MAJOR / 2ND BRIGADE " in fancy block script. 2-sided panoply of arms & eagle powder flask, blued steel double cavity "COLT'S PATENT" bullet mold, two tins of blue paper wrapped Eley Bros. percussion caps with green paper labels, "Hawksley" pewter oil bottle, blued L-shaped screwdriver/nipple wrench combination tool, and functional case key. There are two similar rosewood cased pairs with same fancy block letter inscriptions "AIDE DE CAMP" in same serial range obviously contracted by the same unknown mid 1850s State Militia. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of pertinent pages from Locke collection book and information on other 2 cased pairs of same genre. CONDITION: excellent, both revolvers retain virtually all of their original finish on barrel, cylinder, frame, loading assembly, & grips. Grip frames retain only traces of bright blue with plum/blue patina. Casing just fine with one 3" edge crack on lid and cosmetic repairs to rosewood veneer at base. Accessories are fine, flask retains most of its original varnished finish. Cap tins are very good, fragile labels and paper wraps. Mechanically revolvers are fine with crisp shiny rifled bores. PROVENANCE: William Locke collection, Pictured in Locke Collection book 1973, Little John's Auction 2002. Collection of Horst Kreiner. (01-23995/01-23995/JS). ANTIQUE. $45,000-65,000.
