Cal. 44. S# 3385. This is a standard 4th variation Henry rifle made in 1863. 4th variation serial range about 3000-5000, with early DC cavalry guns all found in range 3001-3999 where this gun falls. Original CGC (Charles G. Chapman) inspection cartouche stamped on right side of stock and stamped on frame and barrel, and same small "c" on right side of butt plate near top. Standard configuration for all early martials, rounded 1st type butt plate with 7/8" wide trap door, .9" hole bored in butt stock to accept 4 piece wooden cleaning rod, lever latch on lower receiver tang and latch flange on rear of lever, has a milled flat along the magazine follower slot in lower front of receiver, large magazine follower with 5/8" wide finger tab, small .095 diameter trigger retaining pin, square back front German silver sight blade, slanted profile to stock comb, straight profile to lower edge of stock. Early 2.5" address which ends about S# 3500, sight dovetail milled in barrel only, six groove rifling, 900 yard rear sight with no slide stop screw. Matching serial number stamped on following parts: barrel behind rear sight dovetail, left side of lower receiver tang, top receiver tang channel in butt stock, inside bottom edge of butt plate, and both butt plate screws. The 3 tang screws are original correct unserialized Henry screws. Matching assembly numbers stamped on rounded portion of barrel under loading sleeve and on rear edge of loading sleeve. CONDITION: good overall, all original & authentic, iron patina with light areas of pitting, brass has toned patina, stock is sound with small hairlines & 2 small chips at toe and top tang, well worn, cartouche is visible in outline.
