BOLT ACTION CARBINE. Cal. 45-70. S# 936. Bbl. 24". These carbines were finished at Springfield Armory using Winchester supplied actions. Receiver markings on left side include "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / latest patent date 1877". Bbl. is marked w/ the "VP" & "eagle head" on the top left over chamber & marked "U.S." on top over chamber. Bolt shroud is marked on top "HN.". Straight bolt handle. Springfield ladder rear sight w/ windage provision graduated to 200 yards & marked "R". Blade front sight. Walnut stock marked on the left side behind saddle ring in oval "ESA / 1878". Marked under grip w/ encircled script "P" proof. Combination cutoff & safety on right side behind bolt handle. Solid bbl. band retained by spring. Plated brass forend tip made w/ hinged gate to allow access to a cleaning rod which is not present. CONDITION: stock has well-worn original finish w/ numerous handling marks. Metal has turned overall gray w/ wear & spots of light pitting. Brass forend tip has notable loss of silver colored plating. Bore has worn lands w/ areas of frosting & light pitting throughout.
