Cal. 31. S# 985. Bbl. 5", round with pinched brass sight and integral fixed rear. Mfg. 1851–1857 (approx. 1,000 units) in Chicopee Falls. Offered in barrel lengths of 3" to 7", longer barrels have greater value. Matching 985 on rear of frame under grips and back of lock; 501 on cylinder pivot. Floral etched scene with a stand of arms on a 6 rd. unfluted cylinder; floral engraving on the frame and lock. Plated brass backstrap. Manual cylinder rotation with release button normally forward of trigger resulting from patent lawsuit with Colt in 1851; replacement brass trigger guard with large bolt replacing cylinder release. To further keep from infringing on Colt patents, it was fitted with a Maynard automatic nipple priming (missing cover) system. CONDITION: poor to fair general condition missing hammer and primer door. Replacement trigger guard and missing cylinder release button. The bottom screw-in back strap appears to be a larger-headed replacement. Gray patina throughout, with only traces of plating on the backstrap. Lock functions with a hair trigger. Fair to good bore with almost straight rifling mixed with pitting but generally bright. (01-25041/NW). ANTIQUE. $250-400.
