PERCUSSION REVOLVER. Cal. 28. S# 657. Bbl. 3 1/8". 1 of approx. 1,500-2,000 (between all variations) Maynard Primed Pocket Model single action percussion pistols mfg. by the Massachusetts Arms Company between 1861-1869, this example being of the later style, featuring a automatic revolving cyl. Top of the hinged bbl. shank is marked "MASS. ARMS CO/ CHICOPEE FALLS". Left side of frame and sideplate on right feature foliate vine type scroll engraving, with a small foliate motif engraved on the top forward edge of the hammer, as well as from the bottom of the rear grip strap. Sideplate is marked "MAYNARD'S PATENT/ SEP. 22. 1845.", with "PATENT/ JAN.2.1855" marked on the rear grip strap. Cyl. features foliate etching around its circumference. Frame, sideplate, cyl., bbl., and bbl. latch exhibit a blue finish, with the hammer and bbl. shank exhibiting a case colored finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece plain varnished wood grips. Small brass bead front sight with integral and diminutive U-notch rear sight on top of bbl. shank. Matching (apparent) assembly # "657" is present on the frame (beneath right grip panel and on right beneath sideplate), sideplate (interior), and is handwritten on the interior of the grips in pencil. Bbl. shank and cyl. base pin are matching via "899". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: unrelated black nylon soft case. CONDITION: metal components retain fair to good amounts of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that are fading to gray patina. Bbl. has primarily faded to a brown patina, exhibiting some striations from prior cleaning. Sideplate and right side of bbl. exhibit a few patches of mild pitting. Case colored components are good, exhibiting wear fading to gray patina in contact areas. Very bright bore, exhibiting some light pitting, as well as a few small scattered spots of mild pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show some light superficial marks from handling and storage, as well as some finish wear, but otherwise remain sound. (01-29080/MLW). ANTIQUE. $600-800.
