BY WISCONSIN CIVIL WAR SOLDIER. 17" Overall, 11.75" meaty clip point blade signed “HASSAM BROTHERS / BOSTON”. This “as found” Bowie in its original sheath came from a Wisconsin estate who unfortunately the name of the man who carried it during the Civil War is lost to history. This may be the largest Hassam ever discovered, over 2” longer than any published example. Hassam was well known to have made some of the finest Bowie knives in America from 1849 through Civil War with his unique form. Most distinctive Hassam characteristics are heavy saber ground blades with choil, round back edge, sharpened clip, and hand selected crown stag grips polished and cut to fit hand perfectly. Hassam also used “S” shaped iron cross guards and blades peened over convex German silver capstan. Classic Hassam leather sheath, German silver tip and throat with frog button attached to belt loop. You will not find a better Civil War Hassam then this one. CONDITION: fine overall, blade is bright overall with original toolmarks and some luster, old sharpening. Maker’s mark is double stamped on ricasso. Cross guard has mottled gray/brown iron patina. Grip has one short age crack and hand worn patina. Original sheath is fine with scuffing & craquelure. (02-19368/JS). $8,000-12,000.
