COSTUME JEWELRY. Calabrio was from New York, Milan, and Sarasota, Florida. He was a designer of costume jewelry and bags, and his workmanship and creations are outstanding. This was all handmade by him. This lot consists of approx. 65 necklaces, approximately 65 sets of earrings and approximately 20 handmade belts. In addition to this is a large lot of quality jewelry parts for making jewelry which was part of Calabrio’s inventory. There are around 40–50 plastic bags filled with various parts and ornamentation for making more of this jewelry. In addition to all of this, numerous original consignment sheets showing what his jewelry sold for back in the late 1990s; it indicates the wholesale price and the retail price. According to the bill of sales back in the 1990s, his necklaces sold from anywhere from $50-150 each. His earrings sold from around $20 to $40+ each and his belts sold for $75 to $150+ each. Based on these prices, the jewelry alone less the parts, from the lowest sale price in each of the categories would result in around $6500 resale value but if you use the high end of the estimates then the total evaluation would be $14,200. This does not include the massive amount of jewelry parts that are also included in this lot. Rarely do you see his items advertised. The problem is Calabrio did not sign his pieces he identified himself only on the price tag so once the tag was removed, most people would never know who made it. Also included is a newspaper clipping of the Sarasota Herald Tribune some years back which ran a story on Calabrio together with images including him working in his shop. Calabrio was born in a small town in Italy and there he sold his goods in local villages. Some of his customers, according to the article, eventually included Richard Burton, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, designers like Dior, Armani, Versace, and numerous boutiques from Milan to Manhattan. According to the article, it goes on to say that he earned a reputation as one of the best internationally known accessories and jewelry designers. His label has been featured in Vogue, Women’s Wear Daily, and sold through Saks 5th Avenue, Neiman Marcus. His jewelry consists of all types of textures, shapes, colors and is in most cases very bold and extremely decorative and is all handmade. Much of the jewelry still retains his original paper tags with his signature "Raoul Calabrio, Milan & New York". Frequently the tag will indicate what the item is as well as the asking price. The buyer will receive all the jewelry, all of the parts, the package of old bill of sales, and a copy of the news article on Calabrio. CONDITION: generally excellent. A couple pieces have a loose link. Nearly all in mint condition. (05-117/JJ). $1,000-2,000.
