ARSENAL. Cal. .90 groove dia. (7 deep grooves). S# NSN. Most likely intended for long range sniping; this oversize sporting rifle has 35 3/4" swamped octagon barrel fitted with flip up ladder rear sight marked for 300-1200 meters. Top flat is stamped with three poincon; a crown, the letters "GF" and a small "c". "P" is on upper right flat. Percussion lock with flat arched plate has flat faced hammer. Lock is marked "ARMGERG 1842" over a crown. Rifle is fitted with double set triggers. European walnut stock with acceptance mark above sideplate is iron mounted with very heavy buttplate, trigger guard with curl at rear forming grip, one piece sideplate and heavy schnabled forend tip. A patchbox with sliding wooden cover which has some chip carving is on right side of butt and a Bavarian type cheekpiece is on left. Stock attaches to barrel with two side bolts, rear through oval steel escutcheons, front through forend tip. CONDITION: fine. Barrel retaining over 80% of original blue. Lock with most of its case hardening color. Stock retains most of its original oil finish with a large amount of marks and dings. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically fine. It would take a person of robust stature to deftly handle this huge rifle which weights over 22 lbs.; but I bet it would be a lot of fun to shoot. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22572/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
