Well ground & polished blade is 16" long w/ 6 1/2" long clip point. Well defined medium ridge. 4 1/2" Heavy diamond shaped iron guard. 2 Rosewood scales are pinned to a full tang. Tooled leather sheath is hand stitched w/ an integral sewn throat & belt loop. The blade & crossguard show forging flaws so reminiscent of Confederate cutlery, but the use of rosewood & coffin shape most likely predate this knife to the antebellum era & quite possibly southern. This knife was featured in the winter 1997 Antique Bowie Knife Association Bulletin article by Wayne McNeese. CONDITION: fine overall, blade has 3 chips in cutting edge & delaminated forging flaws, blade is overall bright w/ original polish having scattered areas of pinprick pitting. Hand worn patina to grip. Well fit, original sheath is about 80% intact w/ open seam on cutting edge about half of it's length. Sewn belt loop is missing tab & heavily scuffed. (02-16236/JS). $4,000-5,000.
