WITH MATCHING STOCK, INSCRIBED TO "LTNT W PALITZSCH". Cal. 7.63mm. S# 191502. Bbl. 5 1/2". Pre-War Commercial Mauser C96 with fixed front sight, the rear portion beveled and painted, and tangent rear sight graded 50-1000. Short extractor, two-lug firing pin, small ring hammer, thin trigger. Three-line address on top of chamber with full S# on left chamber flat. Crown/C/U on the left side of the barrel extension. Two-line Mauser address on the right side of the frame. Fitted with serrated wood panels. Marked with a presentation inscription on the left side of the mag. well cutting through the blue "Ltnt. W. Palitzsch/ K.S.F.A.R.No48", the unit marking referencing the Kingdom of Saxony Field Artillery Regiment 48. Fully matching internally and externally, including the grips. A lanyard loop is present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: factory matching stock with khaki canvas carrier to house stock with enclosed pistol, flap secured via 2 buttons. CONDITION: very good, with approximately 90-95% original rust blue and comparable condition fire blue small parts, showing no enhancement. Grips with the most finish show oil darkening and superficial handling marks. Mirror-bright bore with sharp rifling. Correct manual mechanics. Good to very good shoulder stock, most of the varnish having flaked off, with scattered handling marks. Hardware with moderate oxidative etching and thinning, especially the lug, whose upper arm and face have largely toned to gray. The canvas sleeve has stains but intact stitching. A very nice Mauser C96, Pre-War Commercial, with an interesting inscription. PROVENANCE: the collection of Curtis H. Halvorson. (23-5812/LMA). CURIO. $4,500-6,500.
