Cal. 10.75x68mm. S# 85805. Bbl. 24". Model 98 Type B Pattern No. 140 bolt action sporting rifle mfg. by Mauser. The top of the bbl. rib is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER A.-G. OBERNDROF AM NECKAR, followed by "10,5" towards the breech, with the underside of the bbl. being marked with10,45.10,57.420.". Receiver ring features stippling, with Crown/U and Crown/B commercial proofs (also present on the underside of the bbl.) marked on the left, followed by the S#. Left receiver wall is also marked with Mauser's mfg. information. Major metal components exhibit a period blue finish overall, save for on some small parts including the front sight blade, rear sight leafs, bolt stop housing, sling loops, and the floorplate lever, which exhibit a nitre blue finish. Double set triggers exhibit a straw finish, with the follower being polished in-the-white. Checkered wood pistol grip buttstock, featuring a cheek rest, blued steel grip cap, checkered "MW" monogram horn buttplate, and a semi-schnabel tip forend. Solid grooved matte rib, featuring a ramped and dovetailed brass beaded blade front sight, with a dovetailed 3-leaf rear sight, graduated 200, 100 (fixed), and 300. All serialized parts are matching and include the receiver, receiver trigger assembly, bbl. (underside), both folding rear sight leafs, bolt body, bolt shroud, safety lever, cocking piece, extractor, buttstock (interior), trigger guard (rear of mag. housing), floorplate, as well as the floorplate lever. CONDITION: metal components retain bountiful amounts of their period blue finish, exhibiting some spots of light to mild wear and thinning (primarily on the edges of the bbl. at and around the muzzle, as well as on the bolt and bolt knob), some superficial handling marks, as well as a few scattered spots of light surface oxidation and pitting. Nitre blue parts retain the majority of their finish, with the sling loops exhibiting mostly wear through to gray and brown patina. Triggers retain traces of their straw finish, exhibiting wear and thinning that shows through to gray patina, with scattered spots of light age related discoloration. Very bright bore, exhibiting consistent light to mild pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Stock shows scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, as well as a small crack at the toe, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. Buttplate exhibits scattered spots of insect damage and scattered chipping, with the some minor cracking present around the bottom screw slot. (25-511/MLW). CURIO. $2,500-3,500.
