Cal. 8X57mm (8mm Mauser). S# NSN. Bbl. 23 3/4" tapered round sporter weight with raised solid rib (wider at rear third) having raised bead front sight and 2 leaf rear (Type B style). Mfg. is likely pre-WWI, as indicated by style and caliber, as post-war models were usually 8X60mm because military calibers were not allowed by treaty provisions. Basic Model 98 military-style action with light patterns over the chamber and left side of the receiver; the pattern continues on top of the rib, with both areas having random stamped marks that, upon magnification, resemble a bird in flight. Bottom metal has decorative borders of engraved lines and punch-dot patterns. Military-style trigger guard assembly (floorplate not hinged and without quick release) with locking screw at front; no locking screw at rear due to commercial reshaping of the bow. Bolt handle is a flattened teardrop shape with decorative checkering on top and a plain bottom. Root of the handle has a distinct square shape plus standard military-style safety; fitted with double-set triggers. Stock has Type B features: checkered grip area with starburst pattern horn grip cap, uncheckered forend with schnabel tip, straight comb with raised cheekpiece, swivel bases (altered to accept modern detachable swivels), and vintage brown ventilated pad (14 3/4" LOP) marked "REGULAR / L". Military-style Hunter 1" sling. CONDITION: good general appearance, with evidence of much use; thinning metal finish fading to a patina; numerous light to medium stock marks; thin checkering (especially on the left side); extra wood finish; and hardened recoil pad. Very good bore with light wear. PROVENANCE: from the lifelong collection of Robert "Mike" Bricker. (24-1039/NW). CURIO. $450-600.
