ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 7mm Mauser. S# H1986. Bbl. 31 1/8". These interesting rifles were mfg. in Japan for Mexico and are essentially a Type 38 rifle chambered in 7mm Mauser, marked with the Mexican crest. The model was designated 1913 but the rifles were mfg. prior to that date. The contract was for 40,000 rifles of which only 5,000 were delivered in 1913 and the balance of the order was apparently sold to Russia during WWI. Receiver has Mexican crest with "REPUBLICA MEXICANA", "1913". Ladder rear sight graduated to 2300 meters. Inverted V front sight. Straight bolt handle with pear shaped knob. Bolt is marked underneath root "y583". Checkered large tang safety knob. Non-matching S#. 29 7/8" Cleaning rod. Upper band with bayonet lug. Stock set appears to be walnut with 2 piece buttstock construction. Bottom swivels. Period brown leather sling secured at both ends by steel studs. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Japanese type 30 bayonet with 15 5/8" blued steel fullered blade. Bayonet does not appear to fit rifle. Cross guard with curved quillon. Hardwood grips retained by two screws. Ricasso marked on right side with "TOYADA JAIDOSHOKI SEISAKUSHO" arsenal mark. Late type blue steel scabbard with cylindrical tip. Brown leather frog. Bayonet and scabbard in very good condition with light wear and handling marks. Frog has wear and flexing plus small areas of loose stitching. CONDITION: stock set has remnants of white painted marking on right side of butt. Stock has original finish with extensive wear, staining and handling marks. Approximately one inch crack at rear of handguard. Metal retains 60% original blue with thinning, wear, light oxidation and fine pitting. Pitting is notable on barrel between bands. Good shiny bore with lightly worn lands. PROVANANCE: the Collection of Curtis H. Halvorson. (23-5905/RW). CURIO. $500-800.
