Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# 7202w. Bbl. 23 1/2" with Mitchell's Mausers import marking. Blade front sight. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. Original matching numbers on receiver, bbl., and front sight. Right side of butt, bolt handle, bolt shroud, floorplate, and trigger guard are all matching as renumbered many in a modern-looking font; other visible parts are mismatched or unnumbered. Receiver top has "42 1939" markings denoting mfg. by Mauser Oberndorf in 1939. Soviet capture rifle that was later reworked by Mitchell's with a brightly polished bolt assembly, takedown disc, and buttplate; other metal parts have Soviet arsenal-reworked blue finish. Blonde laminated stock set with left side sling provisions. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Mitchell's Mauser Letter of Provenance, numbered to this rifle, a WWI Ersatz-style bayonet with scabbard and leather frog in fair condition. Bayonet does not fit the rifle. CONDITION: importer refinished stock set shows some handling wear and black stain spots. Bright parts show some light oxidation and cleaned pitting. Balance of metal retains 80% arsenal rework blue with scattered blued over oxidation and pitting on the barreled action and some light edge wear. Action functions properly when hand-cycled. Good, bright bore, with some light pitting and frosting but strong rifling. (24-4742/MJC). CURIO. $600-900.
