CARBINE (SIDE LEVER). Cal. 52 smoothbore. NSN. Bbl. 21" browned. Updated adaptation w/ spring retained side lever on right, automatically tipping up breechblock which has usual "S. NORTH" markings & is dated "1848". Action & all sm. parts are browned. Implement storage in butt eliminated. Saddle ring is installed on 8" bar affixed to left hand side. Walnut stock has inspector's marks "WAT / JJC" on sides at rear of action. Bbl. is marked "JH" on right rear. CONDITION: fine, retaining approx. 70% original brown lacquer on all parts including buttplate. Temper blue is evident on operating lever & latch. Stock w/ nearly all original oil finish, inspector's markings sharp & clear. Bright, shiny bore. Mechanically fine. Many Union cavalry regiments were armed w/ these 1843s throughout the Civil War.
