PISTOL WITH HOMEMADE HOLSTER. Cal. 30 Luger S# 6733. One of 1,000 Luger pistols tested by the US government and purchased in 1901, this example falls squarely in the S# range of those known to have been purchased later by Francis Bannerman. It is of standard configuration with a 4-3/4" barrel and without German proofs or "Germany" marking. American eagle is on the receiver ring. Pistol exhibits the correct type of takedown latch with a matching number on the right end and an early-style safety lever with a checkered thumb piece. As is the case with many Bannerman-sold pistols, S#'s are mismatched on minor parts, including trigger stamped "68", toggle assembly "19", and sideplate "30". Grips are numbered "30" right and "65" left. MAG: 1 8rd. unnumbered and unproofed. (Correct. Also, there is no proof in the frame. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: homemade shoulder holster. The consignor's tag says that this Luger came with this holster, which was made in Montana, and that the "forest rangers made much use of the 30 Lugers in the early days". CONDITION: pistol is fine (mismatched). Retaining about 70% original blue with considerable silvering on high edges and silver freckling and holster wear. Grips show wear. Trigger and other strawed parts have most of their original color. Bore is bright and shiny. Magazine has a chip on the right side of the base plug. Mechanically fine except somewhat clogged with grease. Holster leather deteriorated and stiff. PROVENANCE: the collection of Curtis H. Halvorson. (23-5796/MGM). CURIO. $1,500-3,500.
