MODIFICATION. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 1883. Standard configuration with a 6" barrel, adjustable sight on the rear toggle, and grip safety in the long frame. All numbers match, including grips (correct style magazine is numbered "7969"), and all correct proofs are present. Safety has undergone a 1912 modification, making the pistol safe with the lever in the down position. Original markings were removed by a milling machine; new markings were stamped in at the top and have been highlighted with white paint. Backstrap is stamped "WK" and "29" (Kiel Arsenal). MAG: 1 8rd of the correct type, numbered "7969". CONDITION: very good to fine. Metal retains 60–70% of its blue with high edge wear, a considerable amount of flecking, and some scattered deep pits on the right side of the frame and receiver. Bore is poor and considerably pitted. Magazine base plug is cracked. Grips show wear; the upper right corner of the left grip is missing. Pistol functions well but does not fire because the pad of the trigger lever has been altered. PROVENANCE: the collection of Curtis H. Halvorson. (23-5794/MGM). CURIO. $3,000-5,000.
