The sight size of this attractive oil painting is 53 1/2" x 37 1/2", and the frame size is just over 63" x 47 1/2". The vividly colored painting depicts a confrontation between two lions, four safari hunters, two elephants, and several native guides with their dogs. In the center of the foreground is a large elephant with a tiger climbing its neck to reach the native mahout. In the howdah are two wide-eyed hunters, one of which is shooting the tiger with what appears to be a shotgun. To the left is another elephant grasping a tiger around the midsection in an attempt to dispatch the striped beast. The mahout appears calm while the two other hunters, perched in the howdah, watch intently. The right side shows several guides with long lances, many of which are on horseback. There are also two dogs depicted, presumably used to aid in the hunt. The lower left shows a gravely wounded guide and another on a rearing, frightened horse, grasping his lance and planning an attack on the center tiger. The scene takes place in a grassland area with a neighboring village dotted by palm trees. A fine painting capturing the urgency of the moment and showing accurate depictions of the indigenous people, as well as the classically attired, likely British, hunters. The impasto is light, and the expert use of color contrast is admirable. The gold-painted frame is in an early 19th century style but obviously a modern production. CONDITION: the painting shows no damage or fading in any way. Colors are vivid, and the canvas shows no holes or abrasions. The frame is exceptionally solid and shows only handling wear. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (02-23551/BF). $2,000-4,000.
