SHORT RIFLE.
Cal. 7x57. S# 4133. This very interesting rifle with carbine length (18 1/2") barrel appears to be custom finished in British style. The barrel has aftermarket 2 folding leaf rear sight fitted in original island base. Sling loop is in sleeved on eye and a custom front bead is in standard sleeved on front ramp. Typical Mannlicher carbine action with usual factory marks on side wall has top of receiver ring marked "MADE IN AUSTRIA" "PATENT" "Mannlicher" "Schoenauer" "HOCHRASANZ" "KAL:7X57". Hochrasanz translates to "high rated". This cataloger has never seen this mark before. Bolt stop is of late long type except has custom shaped deeply checkered thumb pad at rear. A Lyman 36 type sight is fitted with unusual round attachment screw. Typical bolt with butter knife handle is engine turned and cocking piece retaining nut has unusual stirrup to aid in re-cocking without opening bolt. Usual rotary magazine cover has had rear hole blocked with decorated circular brass plug. Double stage trigger is case hardened, early style trigger guard with integral bow has long tang. Disassembly reveals matching serial number with correct font to other parts of rifle. Horn capped pistol grip stock measures 13 5/8" over typical steel buttplate with trap. Toe of plate has 1/2" return to reinforce wood. Stock features well done multipoint pattern checkering with broad mullered borders, shadowline right hand cheekpiece, horn forend tip and a steel spacer under grip cap. This stock has correct style matching number in barrel channel and does not appear to have been altered. CONDITION: very fine as lightly refinished. Metal parts with over 90% good quality re-blue, wood with light oil refinish over some old marks and a few subsequent scratches. There is a stress crack on both sides of toe and one or two short cracks behind action tang. Bore is bright and shiny, action is smooth. A nifty little Mannlicher! (22-6416/MGM). CURIO. $1,500-3,000.
