FLOOR CANDELABRA. Circa 1867-1870. By Fourment-Houille & Cie. Foundry. Val d’Osne, France. This chandelier cast as a Grecian water carrier. This beautifully patinated cast iron figure attired in flowing robe, and floral garland in her right hand. Her left arm is upraised holding an Amphora to which is attached an ornate 13-light brass chandelier. The central shaft with three C-form down-turned arms, each with a single light. The center of the chandelier is fitted with three arms, each with three scrolled arms enhanced with applied brass leaf tips. The top of the chandelier is surmounted by a single light. All sockets are enhanced with scrolling leaf tips. The torchiere/chandelier is attached to a round metal tripod with platform base. The chandelier is fitted with 13 matching frosted shades, each with beautiful floral etched decoration of the period. The figure still retains its original bronze type finish and you would swear it was bronze unless you used a magnet. NOTE: This French iron foundry was originally named "La Fonderie du Val d’Osne". Founded in 1836 by Jean Pierre Victor Andre (1790-1851). The foundry was known for being fine designers of garden furniture, fountains and lighting; specializing in candelabras and torchieres. The name was later changed to "Fourment-Houille & Cie" in 1867 before another name change in 1870. The reputation for this company was that it was considered to be the best foundry in France and one of the best foundries of Europe during that time period. SIZE: Statue incl top most shade is 72" h. Base is 21" h. Overall is 93" x 28" dia. CONDITION: this was probably originally a gas chandelier, now converted to electric. Surfaces of figure is very good to excellent, very well patinated. One small shade absent. The piece is spectacular. (05-229/JJ). $6,000-10,000.
