Cal. 70. NSN. Bbl. 52 1/4" w/ brass barleycorn front sight & rear sighting groove, has early “P” & “V” proofs on left side of breech end. Aged reproduction lock w/ rnd. lockplate has serpentine cock, bridled frizzen & feather spring w/ bulbous finial. Interior marked “LRC”. Full length stock of somewhat curled grain maple is pinned to bbl. & does not have a buttplate. Cast brass trigger guard has bulbous raised finials. Remnants of a raised field is around bbl. tang. Barrel has 11" welded extension. Modern ramrod is held by 3 banded pipes & matching thimble. Thin sideplate has semi fancy outline. CONDITION: bbl. is mostly dark brown patina w/ heavy patches of rust. Bbl. possibly reconverted from percussion w/ sm. bushed touch hole. Lock has major parts artificially aged to match bbl., however frizzen shows no striking & all internal parts are newly cast. Stock has a relatively modern varnish finish over many repairs. Lock mortise w/ new wood surround. Complete forestock appears to be replaced although a joint line cannot be discerned. Rusted bore. Lock operable. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor.
