RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. NSN. Bbl. 36". After the conclusion of the U.S. Civil War, the U.S. government, in search of a new metallic cartridge rifle, chose Springfield's trapdoor design. The state of New York chose to adopt Remington's Rolling Block rifle, subsequently placing a contract for 15,000 rifles circa. 1871, with some sources noting another contract for an additional 4,500 rifles in 1863. The distinctive New York contract rifles feature a very high curved hammer and thumb lever that protrudes to the right instead of up. Upper receiver tang shows standard Remington mfg. and patent markings. Left side of bbl. and bbl. bands are stamped "B". Top of buttstock is marked with a faint raised "C/ 28", with "RBH" stamped within a banner on the left side at the wrist. 3-band fastened forearm and straight grip buttstock, with iron buttplate. Fixed blade front sight, with U-notch ladder rear sight. Iron slotted tip cleaning rod. CONDITION: metal components have been cleaned and are in-the-white, showing a mostly bright appereance with scattered spots of age related discoloration and spots/areas of light to mild pitting overall. Very bright bore, exhibiting scattered areas of light to mild pitting. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable.
