TRAPDOOR SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 542902. Bbl 32 5/8". Model 1884 Trapdoor single-shot rifle manufactured by Springfield Armory. The lockplate is stamped with a patriotic eagle beside "U S/ SPRINGFIELD". The left side of the barrel is stamped with a "V/P" proof, above an eagle head, and a "P" proof mark. The stock is stamped "8/NY/107" on the top of the comb, with a near identical stamp present on the buttplate tang. Right side of the buttstock is lightly carved with "SB". Stock is stamped with what appears to be an "JWP" or "SWP" over 1892 cartouche on the left side. One-piece smooth wood buttstock. CONDITION: metal components exhibit a dark brown patina, with some spots of old oxidation overall. Very bright bore, exhibiting a couple scattered spots of pitting and retaining strong rifling throughout. Stock shows scattered marks and impressions from storage and handling, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. (01-24138/MLW). ANTIQUE. $700-900.
