SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH FINE TUNE SIGHTS & RED "9" GRIPS. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 499b. Bbl. 7 7/8". LP.08 semi-automatic pistol mfg. by DWM under contract for the Imperial German military in 1917. The bbl. extension is marked "1917" over the chamber, with DWM arsenal proofs marked on the right. Right side of the bbl. extension, bbl., and left side of the breechblock are marked with an Imperial German reichsadler proof. Metal components exhibit period arsenal applied rust blue finish overall, with some small parts including the takedown lever, trigger, safety lever, and ejector exhibiting a straw finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips, which are marked with black "9"s on either panel. While the red "9" marking was mandated during the period for only the C96 pistols to help eliminate the possibility of loading the wrong ammunition, it seems that there was some confusion at the armorer level, with some pistols, such as this example also exhibiting a distinctive "9" on the grip panels. Fine tune blade front sight, with V-notch tangent rear sight, graduated 1-8. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, safety lever & bar, hold-open latch, bbl., front sight, rear sight assembly, bbl. extension, trigger bar, breechblock, extractor, firing pin, toggles, as well as the grips. MAGS: 1 non-matching 8-rd. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their arsenal rust blue finish, exhibiting some spots of light to mild wear and thinning, with scattered spots of surface oxidation overall. Strawed parts show varying degrees of wear, with worn areas exhibiting a gray patina and scattered spots of age related discoloration. Very bright bore, exhibiting some light pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Grips show some smoothing, as well as some superficial marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. PROVENANCE: the Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-290/MLW). CURIO. $1,200-2,000.
