SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 85171. Bbl. 5 1/2". C96 "Red 9" semi-automatic pistol mfg. by Mauser for the Imperial German military during WWI. The top flat of the faceted breech is marked with Mauser's 3-line address, with the S# on the left quarter flat, a double crowned "U" commercial proof on the left flat, and an Imperial inspection proof on the right. Right side of the frame is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/ OBERNDORF A.NECKAR". Front of frame mag. well is marked with an Imperial German Reichsadler. Frame and bbl./bbl. extension exhibit a rust blue finish, with some small parts being either polished in-the-white or nitre blued. Frame is mounted with 2-piece red "9" grooved wood grips. Fixed blade front sight with V-notch tangent rear sight graduated 50-500. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, sub-frame assembly, floorplate, bbl./bbl. extension, bolt stop, and bolt. Grips are matching via the full S# on the interior of the panels. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their period arsenal blue finish, exhibiting light to mild edge wear, some spots of light surface oxidation and pitting, as well as some superficial handling marks overall. Underside of the bbl. exhibits an area of light to mild wear and thinning that is fading to a gray/brown patina. In-the-white parts show spots of age related discoloration. Very bright to near mirror bore, exhibiting some spots of light pitting and grease, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Follower spring is broken at the floorplate, but still locks the bolt rearward. Grips show some scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise present nicely. (25-4246/MLW). CURIO. $1,200-2,000.
