SHOTGUN BY LEFAURE OF PARIS. Cal. 70 - 14 Ga. S# 6986. Most likely made by Pierre Alexis Lefaure working around 1823 this very well made and embellished gun has 26-1/4" fine damascus barrels with octagonal rear sections that transition to raised ribs as points of octagons; flats transition into flutes. Octagonal parts are deep relief engraved with stylized scrolls. Maker's name and address is relief engraved on slightly raised fluted top rib. Patent breeches have bronze blow outs. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with French proofs and S#. Patent breech is very nicely engraved with more stylized scroll. Terminations and some tendrils are silver inlaid. Back spring island locks are not maker marked and are fitted with well filed hammers with octagonal heads. Locks and hammers are fully engraved with more scroll which continues with extensive silver inlay. This engraving and inlay theme is found on all furniture including tang of steel buttplate, trigger guard with scroll at rear forming grip and trigger plate with spear finial. Well figured European walnut stock is deep relief carved with scrolling acanthus similar to metal decoration. Areas include large triangles on both sides of butt and at grip and forend in place of checkering. Stock attaches to barrels with side bolt through engraved steel escutcheons. Hickory ramrod with silver tip mounts through two pipes fluted like barrels and thimble that matches trigger plate. CONDITION: good. Iron parts appear to be cleaned to gray brown. Engraving remains good. Silver inlay is tarnished. Stock retains what appears to be its original finish with numerous marks. Bores are dark. Mechanically good. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Dr. Curtis S. Morse. (01-26310/MGM). ANTIQUE. $600-1,000.
