BAUM RIFLE. Cal. 38. NSN. Bbl. 44" oct., signed "S.B." James Golcher marked flintlock. Has a 5 1/4" brass saddle plate, a 7" toe plate w/ 5 piercings, 16 silver inlays, a 7 1/2" comb inlay & a 4 piece engraved patchbox w/ 9 piercings. Stock is beautifully incise carved behind the cheek & around the bbl. tang. Samuel Baum Sr., 1789-1840 worked in New Berlin/Danville. He is one of the early gunsmiths who started the Upper Susquehanna School of Gunsmithing. He taught many of the other area gunsmiths in his shop & was no longer working as a gunsmith by the mid 1830's. CONDITION: entire gun seems to be in original condition showing normal wear in some spots. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19662/RG). ANTIQUE. $15,000-20,000.
