MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Standard configuration with 40" bbl. dated “1863” and with “VP” and eagle head proofs at rear. Bbl. is fitted with 2 leaf late style sight. Eagle is stamped on bolster. 1863 Type lock with stamped eagle , and marked “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” is dated “1863” at tail. Walnut stock is iron mounted. All metal parts are nickel plated, probably for parade use. Walnut stock extends to within 3" of muzzle with steel cap and is held to bbl. with three spring retained bands. No inspector’s markings are found on left side. “AJ” is stamped behind trigger guard tang. CONDITION: very good to fine. All metal parts retaining most of their nickel plate, considerably browned and stained overall. Stock retains most of its original oil finish with a good scattering of light marks and appears sound. Bore is shiny with strong rifling and with scattered pitting noted toward muzzle. Lock is crisp. (01-21418/MGM). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
