CHARLES MALEHAM. Cal. 12Ga. 2-5/8" actual measure. S# 1267. This fast handling gun has 28" fine skelp damascus barrels fitted with game rib engraved "CHAs. H. MALEHAM 5. WESTBAR. SHEFFIELD No. 1267". Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs. Thumb hole lever rounded action fitted with peninsula back spring locks has rebounding serpentine hammers. Watertable is stamped with S# and James Purdey patent info (use # 4242) in a lozenge. "PATENT BOLT" is also stamped. (This gun was made by W&C Scott who had an agreement with Purdey's and often used their bolting system). Action and lockplates are engraved with about 70% coverage well cut shaded scroll. "CHAS. H. MALEHAM" is at the top of each lockplate. Trigger guard with thumb hole in bow is also scroll engraved. S# is on long tang. Straight grip buttstock of dense stump figured European walnut measures 14-5/8" over original checkered horn buttplate. Point pattern checkering is around grip and a gold oval on toeline is engraved with a monogram "CDO" (?). Matching splinter forend with decorative steel tip has W&C Scott patent push button release marked with lighthouse logo. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .732. R .731. Restriction: L .024 recess (mod). R .021 recess (mod). (This choking system was often used in the early 1870's and in this instance appears to be original; consignor states that it is quite effective). Wall thickness: L .025. (.018 in recess). R .028 (.018 in recess). STOCK: DAH: 2"+. DAC: 1-5/8"+. CAST: about 1/2" off. LOP: 14-5/8". WEIGHT: 6 lb. 14 oz. CONDITION: good original "as found". Barrels retaining about 70% original brown with good pattern definition. Action and lockplates retain perhaps as much as 40% original case hardening color. All metal has a scattering of pin prick oxidation. Stocks retain over 80% original oil finish with a good number of bumps and marks. Checkering moderately worn. Bores are mostly bright and shiny with a good amount of moderate pitting toward breech ends. Action is tight; barrels on face. Locks are crisp. (01-27223/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
