A rarely seen circa 1860-1880, Northwest coast, hand-carved wooden effigy pipe with mother of pearl inlays from the Klinket culture. Pipe depicts a rather macabre view of a person being swallowed by a monster with a bird trying to pull the person by the head, out of the monster. The bird is sitting in the mouth of a larger bird. Pipe has a beautiful hand rubbed, dark finish with inlaid mother of pearl eyes on all of the creatures. CONDITION: pipe shows light overall wear & has very dramatic eye appeal. There is an age crack at the base likely due to wood drying. (02-17067/BF). $1,000-1,600.
