Cal. 10.15x61R. S# 15803 All visible numbers match. Bbl. 19 1/4". Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk developed the M28 Harpoon rifle around 1911 from the Model 1884 Jarmann service rifle for hunting large fish and marine mammals such as seals, as well as for throwing lines in rescue work. The rifles were shortened, the repeating mechanism was changed to single shot and this rifle in particular has an added heavy steel buttplate app. 1" thick as well as a thick rubber slip-on recoil pad. The rifling was left in place and the rifle was able to continue to be used with its original cartridge. The receiver is marked on the left side w/ "S" and S#. The hardwood stock has a sporter configuration which includes coarse checkering added in the grip area and has been fitted with brass plates on each side of the forend with a transverse hole to accommodate a yoke type mount. The sights consist of the notch in the bolt sleeve at the rear and an added brass blade at the front. Various types of harpoons were available including hunting harpoons, rescue harpoons & rocket assisted harpoons. the harpoon lines were available in various lengths packed in special crates. The launching cartridges for the harpoons were mfg. into the 1970s. A hunting type harpoon accompanies this rifle which measures 23 1/4" overall. It has a quadrangular shaped tip w/ 2-3" folding barbs attached. The harpoon is also equipped w/ a cable attachment. Rubber buttpad is present. CONDITION: stock has extensive wear, staining & handling marks commensurate w/ heavy use in harsh environments. There is a crack in the grip area on the left side extending into the checkering. Sm. crack on top behind receiver tang. Notable spot of missing checkering on the right side. Brass plate has somewhat crudely fitted appearance & was likely an addition to the rifle. The metal has turned gray & patina throughout w/ moderate wear, oxidation & fine scattered pitting. Bore has heavily worn riffling which would be expected by the firing of steel rods & is turning dark w/ scattered pitting. (01-24179/RW). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
