Cal. 45 Colt. S# 17517. Bbl. 7 1/2" with blade front sight. Mfg. 1875. As noted in "A STUDY OF THE COLD SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER" by Graham, Kopec & Moore, "The U.S. Colt Single Action revolvers manufactured in 1875 are among the most interesting, and least known U.S. Colt Cavalry revolvers. There were three U.S. Ordnance Principal Sub-inspectors who inspected these revolvers at the Colt factory." The two known inspectors are identified as A.P. Casey & Samuel B. Lewis while the third, unknown, is recognized as using a tiny single "J" initial. Trigger guard, cyl & bbl. all bear this initial "J", with bbl. also having small initial "P". Hammer slot marked "C". Matching numbers on frame, grip frame, cyl. & bbl. 1 Piece walnut grips with faintly visible "APC" cartouche on left side. 1 line Italic bbl. address. 2 Line patent date on left side of frame followed by "US". CONDITION: metal has turned gray with an even brown patina. Frame & ejector rod housing exhibit areas of cleaned pitting. Cyl. pin retaining screw appears replacement. Grips appear to have been lightly sanded & refinished with cartouche still lightly visible. Bore shoes even light pitting with strong rifling. All 4 clicks present, last notch is weak and barely holds. (01-25341/BH). ANTIQUE. $9,500-12,500.
