Original box as used on Supers starting in 1959 and ceasing in April of 1961 due to a fire at the supplier. Ruger was not able to find an acceptable supplier for more wood boxes so for just over one year, they utilized a white cardboard box with revolver outlined insert plus they instituted a high polish (originally a duller "standard polish") with a slightly lowered price to make up for not having the wooden box. From late 1962 to 1973 they used the common black and red 2 piece box. The lower part of the wood box has an outline for the revolver and was issued with both long frame and short frame Supers. Long frame versions had a little extra wood removed in the butt area to allow for the longer grip frame. The long frame boxes are quite scarce as references indicate that only about 300 long frame Supers were made. This box is for the short frame, but the insert is almost hand removable due to the release of some of the glue that retained it. Because of this, it would be quite possible to remove the insert by breaking the remaining glue retention along with a bit of wood from the butt area thus creating the more valuable long frame box. All of the wooden boxes were stamped "GENUINE MAHOGANY" at the mid point of the bottoms. A very few boxes had nickel plated hardware but most are like this one with brass hardware. Its photo shows a large chip of the insert at the muzzle area; this is in the upper surface of the Mahogany in an area that has a glued in reinforcement piece of wood to aid in keeping this weak point from breaking; a similar reinforcement is at the lower rear butt area (original reinforcements). Box has average exterior handling marks and a presentable interior. Left latch is missing 1 small brass brad that helped secure the latch set plus a slight dent in the top of the lower portion of the latch. (02-26917/NW). NON GUN. $350-500.
