HERBERT GILLE FOR THE KNIGHTS CROSS WITH OAKLEAVES, SWORDS AND DIAMONDS. This exceptionally rare 4 page document dated April 19th, 1944 from the 56th Panzer Korps recommends SS-Obergruppenfuhrer and General der Waffen-SS Herbert Otto Gille for the Diamonds for his Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Gille was a veteran officer of WWI and was much lauded for his service in the Polish Campaign at the beginning of WWII. He received the German Cross in gold early in 1942. For his exemplary service on the Russian Front leading the SS "Wiking" division, he was awarded the Knights Cross and subsequently the Oak Leaves for his Knights Cross. In February of 1944 he received the Swords for the Knights Cross and this document recommends him for the Diamonds that he received on April 20th, 1044. Gille was only the 12th man to ever receive this high honor, with only 27 such awards given throughout the entire war. CONDITION: the paper is quite thin and has yellowed with age. The edges are a bit tattered but the words are clear and easily read. (02-24349/BF). $1200-1800.
