Cal. 50. NSN. Bbl. 40 1/4" round w/ faceted transition to octagon shank portion. Top flat has a script marking that appears to read "1 X Hafs Grener". Brass blade front sight w/ fixed V notch rear sight. French style side lug conversion. Engraved trade conversion lock is marked "Joseph Golcher". Plain trigger. Wedge fastened full length Roman nose cheek piece stock of curly maple. Rectangular lid pierced & segmented brass patchbox w/ fancy finial. Other brass fittings consist of crescent buttplate, toe plate, finger curl trigger guard, engraved sideplate, thimble & nose cap. Stock has extensive incise & relief carving. Cheek piece has relief carved lower edge w/ date, 1791 below it. Rear, lower & forward portions of cheek piece have extensive incise foliate carving. Initials "M.D.J" are found near the left toe. Complimenting relief carving is found on right side of stock below & forward of patchbox & continuing to top tang area. Bbl. channel has mouldered borders leading to extensive relief carving on forend area extending to sides of trigger guard. Comb & wrist of stock have six deeply cut kill notches. Hardwood ramrod is held by 2 faceted brass pipes. CONDITION: bbl. has dark brown patina appearance w/ heavy pitting in breech area. Lock plate is partially cleaned bright & shows pitting. Stock shows heavy wear & handling marks w/ chips extending along a substantial length on right side of bbl. channel. Additional chips & wood erosion are found on left side of shank as well as around lock & top tang. Functioning lock. Dark pitted bore retains strong rifling. (01-22784/DS). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
