RIFLE. Cal. 45. NSN. William Buchele, 1895-1977, was a renowned builder of contemporary flintlock & percussion rifles & pistols in the 1960's -1970's. He is known as a co-author of the book "Recreating the American Long Rifle" with George Shumway and Peter Alexander. Bbls. 36" octagon with rifled bores. German silver blade front sights with fixed square notch rear sights. Top flat of 1 bbl. is engraved "W. BUCHELE". Breech end of rotating bbl. section has plain non-engraved iron pans and frizzens. Back action lock and brass sideplate have borderline engraving. Plain curled trigger. Roman nose stock of fancy tightly curled maple with relief carved point extending from the ears around lock and sideplate areas with moulded border at toeline. Right side has moulded lower edge on patchbox surrounded by ornate vine type relief carving that extends to right side of wrist. Cheekpiece features a bright steel oval engraved with an American eagle surrounded by wire inlays. Right side of stock has rectangular lid pierced and segmented patchbox with daisy finial and scroll hand engraving. Crescent brass buttplate and toeplate have matching engraving. Finger curl brass trigger guard with a star engraved iron button on the leading edge. Swivel breech bbl. section is fitted with 2 full length maple forearm panels. 1 panel features a 4 3/4" engraved brass escutcheon leading to a brass octagonal thimble with matching engraved finial and 2 octagonal brass pipes holding a plain hardwood ramrod. Ramrod channel has incise carved borders. Opposite forearm panel features incise carved borders with 3 bright finished 8-point iron stars and relief floral carving found forward of the frizzen spring. CONDITION: fine. Metal parts retain most of their antique browned finish showing scattered spots of light corrosion. Stocks have very good finish. Brass parts have acquired a pleasing mild patina. Sound lock and frizzens. Bores have a rough darkened appearance retaining strong rifling. (01-27939/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,500.
