A fine example of an Ottoman Shamshir likely of the Tanzimat era from 1839 to 1876. The overall length is 38 1/4" and the blade length is about 30 1/2". Plain swept blade with a simple wooden shamshir grip and pommel. The gilded down turned guard is typical of Ottoman swords of the Tanzimat period. Hide covered wooden scabbard with gilded silver mounts showing fine decoration. The nautical style knot suspension loops identify this as a naval sword. A fine representative sword from the era of imperial fragmentation. CONDITION: blade has minor staining and a gray patina. Hilt shows light wear. Scabbard is actual quite nice and displays well. (02-24425/BF). $500-800.
